Complex Medicare Situations
Separate urgent deadlines from longer-term coverage decisions when several rules, policies, or life events intersect.
Active work, COBRA and retiree insurance
These coverage sources can have different Part B timing and primary-payer rules. Ask who pays first, whether the coverage is based on active employment, and when it ends. Medicare specifically treats COBRA differently from eligible current-employment group coverage.

Disability and serious conditions
Some people qualify before age 65 due to disability, ALS or End-Stage Renal Disease. Rules for when coverage begins and coordination with other insurance can vary by path. Use Medicare’s eligibility routes rather than assuming the age-65 calendar applies.

High income or low income
SSA determines whether IRMAA applies to Part B and D and reviews qualifying requests for lower amounts. People with limited resources may qualify for Medicare Savings Programs or Part D Extra Help; use the official application routes.

Moving or losing coverage
Changes in service area or qualifying coverage may create a Special Enrollment Period for a private Medicare plan. A Medigap protected purchase right is a separate question. Save dated notices and verify both before cancelling any existing policy.
