Medigap Companies

Compare standardized benefits, current prices and ratings from the actual companies offering policies in your area.

Standard benefits are set by the letter

In most states, companies selling the same Medigap letter must provide the same basic standardized benefits. The brand does not make Plan G cover the Part B deductible or make Plan A cover the Part A deductible. Focus carrier comparison on real differences after confirming the plan letter: premium, rating method, discounts, service and availability.

Pricing approaches affect later years

Medicare describes community-rated, issue-age-rated and attained-age-rated pricing methods. These describe how age affects the premium, not a guarantee against all increases. Medical inflation and other approved factors can change premiums. Ask the company for its pricing method and the rate applicable to the person’s state, age and effective date.

Compare qualifying discounts

An insurer may offer household, non-smoker, female, annual-payment or automatic-payment discounts. Discounts can require eligibility conditions or expire. Request written confirmation of the premium before and after each discount and compare the same plan letter, residence and payment arrangement. A quoted monthly rate without the eligibility condition can mislead when the first bill arrives.

Availability and rights are local

A carrier may not offer every standardized letter in every state or to every applicant. Massachusetts, Minnesota and Wisconsin have different standardization. Outside federal open enrollment or a guaranteed-issue right, medical underwriting may affect acceptance where permitted. Confirm both the carrier’s local product and the applicant’s right to buy before ending another policy.

Keep service and claims practical

Ask how the insurer handles policy service, billing, household discount changes and support when Original Medicare has processed a claim. Medicare pays first and the Medigap policy covers its contract share of remaining eligible cost. Obtain the actual policy and retain the agent or service contact; no national price listing can substitute for a written local quote and effective date.
