Hospital bills under Medicare
Part A inpatient coverage depends on formal admission and benefit-period rules. In 2026 the inpatient hospital deductible is $1,736 for each benefit period. Observation can occur in a hospital without an inpatient admission.

Additional exposure
An Advantage plan can have its own inpatient cost sharing and annual medical maximum. A Medigap letter may pay all or part of the Part A deductible. Compare those actual amounts before buying an additional fixed-benefit product.

Verify the separate policy trigger
A hospital indemnity policy is separate insurance. Ask whether observation, inpatient admission, ICU days, exclusions and waiting periods trigger a benefit, and obtain the actual certificate. Medicare does not specify that private policy’s terms.
