Medicare Part C

Understand Medicare Advantage as an alternative way to receive Part A and Part B benefits.

Part C is a coverage path

Medicare Advantage is Part C: a Medicare-approved private-plan way to receive Part A and Part B benefits rather than billing most services through Original Medicare. You still have Medicare and still pay the Part B premium. You need both A and B, must live in the service area, and can join or change coverage only during an applicable election period.

Network and prior approval

An HMO ordinarily limits routine care to its network, while an HMO-POS may cover specified out-of-network services and a PPO generally allows covered out-of-network care at greater cost when a provider agrees to treat you. Plans can require referrals or prior approval for particular services. Emergency care, urgently needed care and out-of-area dialysis have separate protections; they do not turn all routine out-of-network care into covered care.

Count all components of cost

Compare the Part B premium, any additional plan premium, hospital and medical deductibles, copays, coinsurance and any separate drug spending. Medicare Advantage plans have a yearly limit for covered Part A and B out-of-pocket costs; plan documents may state separate in-network and combined limits. The limit does not turn premiums or all noncovered items into free services. No national figure substitutes for the exact local plan.

Drug benefits and extras

Most Advantage plans include Part D, but confirm the actual plan’s drug list, dosage, pharmacy network and utilization rules. Extra dental, vision or hearing benefits vary and can contain annual allowances, provider networks and frequency limits. The presence of a benefit category in an advertisement does not establish that a particular treatment or provider is covered.

Compare by contract and year

Get the plan’s Evidence of Coverage and Annual Notice of Change, then identify service area, provider directory, drugs, annual maximum and changes for the coming year. Medicare’s plan comparison tool can filter local choices. If you already have Medigap, it cannot pay an Advantage plan’s copays, and later Medigap purchase rights need separate review.
