Long-Term Care Planning
Understand that Medicare is not comprehensive long-term custodial-care coverage and evaluate other planning approaches.
Medicare does not finance routine custodial care
Most long-term care is assistance with everyday activities and is outside Medicare’s coverage, whether provided in a nursing home or the community. Medigap generally does not pay for that long-term-care service either.

Skilled nursing is a different benefit
Medicare may cover a qualifying short-term skilled nursing facility stay when its medical and eligibility conditions are met. That benefit does not become indefinite room-and-board or custodial coverage. Read the specific qualifying-stay and day-limit rules.

Separate planning needs documents
Medicaid eligibility is state-specific and private long-term-care insurance follows its issued policy. If comparing such a product, obtain the daily or monthly benefit, elimination period, inflation provisions, coverage triggers, exclusions and premium history in writing.
